The Community Van

Transportation challenges can be a significant barrier to inclusion and access for many residents and clients of non-profit agencies in Dartmouth. The Dartmouth North Community Van program was initiated with the aim of helping organizations to create greater access to the wider community and services their clients need.

“The Van” launched in 2012 and is available to non-profit organizations to serve those with few or no transportation alternatives. While its most common use is to transport people to and from food banks, it also provides agencies with an opportunity to expand program options at an affordable cost.

Past trips have included SPCA dog walking at Shubie Park, bowling and ice cream trips, and visits to Shakespeare by the Sea and The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

By the end of 2018, The Van had travelled over 72,000 kilometres and transported 23,940 residents. Demand continues to grow, with over 15 different organizations having taken advantage of this community resource.
